Picture 1 of 12

Photograph of Israeli observant Jews praying or davening at dawn during a two-day march and political demonstration in the Judean Hills near Nablus on the West Bank, Palestine. The Jewish marchers came from Israel to express their desire to settle in the West Bank and claim it as Jewish Zion and Israeli territory. There were about 40,000 marchers on this 25 kilometer march, which was organized by the ultra zionist Gush Emunim political movement in Israel. Gush Emunim encouraged Zionism and settlement in lands that they believe were allotted to the Jews by God in the bible. Gush Emunim members are Zionists and many are Orthodox Jews. Some of the marchers wear yarmulkes and tallis prayer shawls as they daven and recite the Jewish morning prayer called Shacharit at dawn. Photograph by Nathan Benn taken March 31, 1975.
