Picture 1 of 14

Photograph of landscape of the Sinai mountains, valleys and desert from the peak of Jabal Musa, the traditional Mount Sinai, at sunrise. Mount Sinai is a sacred spiritual site in Jewish, Arabic and Christian religions. The Book of Exodus of the Bible tells how Moses received the Ten Commandments carved in stone from God at Mt. Sinai. Jabal Musa, aka Gebel Musa aka Jebel Musa aka Moses Mountain is the popular mountain to be identified as Mount Sinai, though it is not proven as the site and other mountains are suggested. Jabal Musa is a 2285 meter tall mountain next to Mount St. Catherine, which is the tallest peak in the Sinai. The Monastery of St. Catherine is nearby. Photograph by Nathan Benn taken November 3, 1974.
