Photograph of Israel Defense Forces aka Zahal tank practicing maneuvers at Raphidim in the Sinai Desert
Photograph of Israel Defense Forces aka Zahal tank practicing maneuvers at Raphidim in the Sinai Desert, the forward Israeli military position facing Egyptian forces at the Suez Canal. The Sinai was captured by Israel from Egypt during the 1973 Yom Kippur War After 1975 the Israeli army withdrew from the Sinai desert. Raphidim is the site described in the book of Exodus in the bible where Moses and the Israelites fought a battle with Amalek and the Amalakites during the Exodus. Therefore the presence of Israeli tanks facing Egyptians at Raphidim has a strong parallel to biblical history. Photograph by Nathan Benn taken April 22, 1975.
